Alton Village Square
Background and History
The Village Square is located on the site of the former stone carriage works building. It is anchored by a series of dry stone walls which incorporate elements of the original building. The stone moon gate was created by Eric Landman, and Neal Rippengate from Scotland helped to build it; Daniel Sinclair created the bronze bonsai tree; Norman Haddon, stone mason at Balmoral Castle, craftsmen from Vermont and local stone mason Eric Landman built the various walls with the help of local residents.
Built into the wall on the west side of the park are the original Boggs & Rowcliffe Carriage Works name stone, the 1894 date stone for the Barber & Bro Carriage Works as well as a stone horseshoe with the date 1894.
On the east side of the bonsai tree wall is a commemorative stone recognizing Martin Middaugh Jr. and his wife Elizabeth Middaugh Gaynor as Alton’s Founding Family.
To date we have added benches, picnic tables, a bicycle rack and garbage containers and a wonderful Spruce Tree which we decorate at Christmas.
Hydro and water services have been added. We have community gardens with a Butterflyway and veggies for all to enjoy. A water feature was added this summer and a Heritage Plaque unveiled at the Alton Bicentennial.
Various events have taken place since the conception of the Square. 2015 Pan Am Games torch was brought to the Village Square and a celebration took place, thanks to a number of volunteers led by Andrew Welsh. The lighting of your Christmas tree has become an Annual event.
